Alternate Data Stream (ADS) is an SMB protocol capability that allows files and directories to store multiple named attributes (streams) and their corresponding data. Applications typically use this capability to store additional metadata within the file or directory itself. ADS for file and directories are retained when files are moved from one path to another within a VAST Cluster that supports ADS - VAST Cluster v3.2 and higher. Popular use cases of ADS are to store additional file and directory metadata such as description, file type icon, the shapes of windows, text for tool-tip, definitions of menus and their contents, application code, style (font, color and size of text), and so on. The additional metadata is stored alongside the regular data but is contained within the file or directory.
Upgrading to VAST Cluster 3.2.0 automatically enables ADS.
No action is needed on the existing SMB share. There is no need to remount the share.
Once you have upgraded, applications can use ADS to assign attributes to files as you edit them on macOS or Windows.
There are no additional configuration steps for ADS. ADS is a built-in feature of the SMB protocol on VAST Cluster 3.2.
ADS will be retained when files and directories are moved within the VAST Cluster.
ADS will not be retained when files and directories are replicated to S3.
VAST Cluster 3.2.1 limits the number of ADS per file or directory to 32.
ADS names (includes stream name + stream type over SMB) have a max character length of 255.
ADS are not seen or accessible by protocols other than SMB.
