Rack Requirements and Stacking Order

Plan to rack the units according to the racking layout provided in the Rack Diagram tab of your site survey.

The following are general guidelines that are usually employed when planning the layout.

Rack Dimensions and Aisle Clearances

It is highly recommended to install the VAST Cluster CBoxes and DBoxes in a 1200 mm (47") deep rack. The rack depth is needed to accommodate the depth of the DBoxes and CBoxes and enable access to PDUs.

Your rack must meet the following space requirements:

 

Mavericks DBox

CERES DBox

CBox

Distance between front and rear rack posts

Minimum: 673 mm (26.5")

Maximum: 868 mm (34.2")

Minimum: 690.6 mm (27.2")

Maximum: 1041.4 mm (41")

Minimum: 610 mm (24")

Maximum: 838 mm (33")

Minimum distance from front rack rails to PDUs

950 mm (37.4")

The DBox and CBox extend beyond the rear rack rails. Minimum clearance ensures that PDUs at the back of the rack are not blocked by the units themselves and therefore that power cables can reach them.

Minimum front aisle clearance for DBox installation:

1143 mm (45")

945 mm (37") Recommended: 1295 mm)

  

Front aisle clearance for FRU replacements

813 mm (32")

The DBox slides out 813 mm at the front of the rack to enable access to SSD slots at the sides.

397 mm (15.6") (length of removable PSU).

  

Rear aisle clearance for DNode replacement:

762 mm (30")

550 mm (21.6")(length of removable DTray)

  
 

Rack Slot Usage

Allow the following numbers of rack slots per VAST Data-provided component:

  • DBox: Mavericks models: 2U, CERES models: 1U

  • CBox: 2U

  • 16-port data switch pair: 1U (includes both switches)

  • Each 32-port data switch: 1U

  • Management switch: 1U

 

Recommended Stacking Order

  • Data switches are typically mounted at the mid-rack position (2) with the DBoxes below (3) (Illustration shows 2U Mavericks DBoxes) and the CBoxes above (1), enabling easy cabling of both CNodes and DNodes to the switches.

  • Typically the management switch is mounted at the top of the rack. This is discretionary depending on the available space.

  • For Mavericks DBoxes, plan for 32" additional cable slack for pulling the DBox out at the front whenever drives are replaced.

  • You will typically be supplied with a cable management system for managing the DBox cable slack. Please consult your Support Engineer regarding allowing slot spaces for the cable management system and how to install it. Otherwise, we might recommend leaving one empty 1U slot between every two DBoxes for managing the cable slack.
