You can create a quota on a directory, with or without specifying quotas for individual users and groups.
For a simple directory quota, only do the procedures given below in the section Create a Directory Quota. For a directory quota with user and group quotas, do the instructions given in the sections Create a Directory Quota and Configure User/Group Quotas below.
-
From the left navigation menu, select Element Store and then Quotas.
-
Click Create Quota.
-
In the Quota Rules tab, complete the fields described below:
Field
Description
Name (required)
A unique name for the quota.
Path (required)
The path to the directory.
The quota applies to the entire directory, including all subdirectories. If a quota configured on a subdirectory is bigger than the quota on its parent directory, the more restrictive quota applies.
Default Email
Emails are sent to users if and when they exceed their user/group quota limits. Default Email is a default email address that is used instead of a user's email address in the event that no email address is found for the user on a provider and no email suffix is set in the Quota Setup area of the Notifications settings.
For more information about this feature, see Managing User Quota Emails .
Capacity
Storage space usage limit above which warnings of exceeding the quota are issued, and the grace period countdown is triggered.
Files & Directories
Number of directories and unique files under the path above which warnings of exceeding the quota are issued, and the grace period countdown commences. A file with multiple hard links is counted only once.
Grace period
Set this value to trigger an alarm and block write operations to the directory if either of the soft limits on the directory are exceeded for a specified time period.
If the grace period is not set, the directory is only write blocked if and when usage reaches one of the hard limits.
Specify the grace period in the format:
[DD] [HH:[MM:]]ss
. Examples:-
To specify 30 days, 20 hours, 15 minutes and 10 seconds, enter
30 20:15:10
. -
To specify 18 minutes, enter
18:00
. -
To specify 20 hours, enter 20:00:00.
-
You can also specify time in days, hours, minutes or seconds, in the format, for example 10d, 10h, 10m or 10s. The usage is case sensitive, entering 10D or 10H will return an error.
Capacity
Storage usage limit, above which no further writes are allowed.
When the hard limit is reached, the HARD_EXCEEDED alarm is triggered.
The value must be a complete integer and must be specified with a unit of measurement. Do not insert a space between the value and the unit of measurements. Valid units are:
The units are case-insensitive. For example:
4gb
is valid.Files & Directories
Number of directories and unique files under the path, above which no writes are allowed. A file with multiple hard links is counted only once.
Tenant
Select a tenant if you want to specify that the quota should serve a non-default tenant.
Create Directory
Enable this setting to create the directory if the directory was not created yet.
If Create Directory is disabled and the directory doesn't exist, the quota will not be created.
Enable User/Group Quotas
If you want to enable user and/or group quotas on the directory, enable this setting.
Enable Alarms
If user/group quotas are enabled, alarms are enabled by default on the following events, which can be managed as Event Definitions:
-
A threshold event that monitors the number of users exceeding their quotas. According to the default event definition, an alarm of major severity is raised when one or more users exceed their user quota limits on the quote. The alarm notification reports the number of users that exceeded their quota.
-
A threshold event that monitors the number of users that are blocked from writing to the quota. Per the default event definition, an alarm of critical severity is raised when one or more users is blocked from writing to the quota.
You can use this setting to disable these alarms for the quota.
This setting does not affect emails sent to users when they exceed quota limits. Such emails continue to be sent when this setting is disabled.
Enable getting emails from AD/LDAP
Enable this setting to receive emails from the Active Directory and LDAP services.
Note
The Default User Rule fields are applicable if the Enable User/Group Quotas setting is enabled. Use these fields to define a user quota rule that applies to all users by default. This is optional. Rules defined for specific users override the default user rule.
Grace period
Specify the default grace period. For more information, refer to the (Hard Limit) Capacity field description given in this table above.
(Hard limit) Capacity
Specify the default storage usage limit, above which no further writes are allowed. For more information, refer to the (Hard Limit) Capacity field description given in this table above.
(Hard limit) Files & Directories
Specify the default number of directories and unique files under the path, above which no writes are allowed. A file with multiple hard links is counted only once.
-
-
If you enabled the Enable User/Group Quotas setting, optionally use the Default User Rule fields to define a default rule to apply quota limits to all users individually. If you do not define a default rule, users are only limited individually by any individual user and group rules that you go on to define in the User Rules and Group Rules tabs. If you define a default rule and you also define individual user rules, the individual user rules override the default user rule.
Capacity
The limit of capacity usage by the user at which warnings of exceeding the quota are issued, and the grace period countdown commences.
Files & Directories
This is a limit on the number of directories and unique files in the quota directory that the user can create, which is not enforced until the grace period is reached.
If the user exceeds this limit, a warning is sent by email unless alarms are disabled. A file with multiple hard links is counted only once.
Grace period
Set this value to trigger an alarm and block write operations to the directory if the user exceeds either the capacity soft limit or the files and directories soft limit for a specified time period.
If the grace period is not set, the user is only write blocked if and when the user reaches one of the hard limits.
Capacity
The capacity usage limit beyond which no writes will be allowed for the user.
The value must be a complete integer and must be specified with a unit of measurement. Do not insert a space between the value and the unit of measurements. Valid units are:
The units are case-insensitive. For example:
4gb
is valid.Files & Directories
The number of directories and unique files in the quota directory that the user can create.
A file with multiple hard links is counted only once.
-
-
If you enabled the Enable User/Group Quotas setting, optionally use the Default Group Rule fields to define a default ruleset to apply quota limits to all groups, as for users in the previous step. Rules defined for specific groups override the default group rule.
-
If you did not enable the Enable User/Group Quotas setting, click Create.
Quota creation now begins. The process is asynchronous and you can track the quota's state in the Quotas page.
If you did enable the Enable User/Group Quotas setting, continue with Configure User/Group Quotas.
If you enabled user/group quotas, you can create rules that restrict the usage of each user and/or group. These rules override the Default User Rule and Default Group Rule, if configured in the Quota Rules tab, for those users and groups bound by these rules.
-
For each user or group for which you want to set individual quota limits, select the User Rules or Group Rules tabs, click Add Rule and complete the respective fields as given below.
Name
The user's user name or the group's group name.

The limit of capacity usage by the user at which warnings of exceeding the quota are issued, and the grace period countdown is triggered.

Quota creation now begins. The process is asynchronous and you can track the quota's state in the Quotas tab in Element Store.
To create a directory quota, use the quota create command. This includes creating default user and group quotas but not any additional user or group quotas.
To add non default user or group quota rules to a directory quota, use the userquota create command.
