Mounting a Cascade Lake CBox

Important

Inserting the CBox into the rack requires two people or a mechanical lift.

Caution

The maximum recommended server weight for the rack rails can be found at https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000007806/server-products/single-node-servers.html. Exceeding the maximum recommended weight or misalignment of the server may result in failure of the rack rails holding the server. Use of a mechanical assist to install and align server into the rack rails is recommended.

Caution

Slide/rail mounted equipment is not to be used as a shelf or a work space.

1: Check Rail Mount Kit Inventory

Identify the following items in the CBox rail mount kit:

  1. Right adjustable mounting rail (inner rail marked FRONT A).

  2. Left adjustable mounting rail (inner rail marked FRONT B).

  3. Front bracket

  4. Rear bracket

  5. Inner rail (removable)

  6. 2 x M5X10(P0.8) screws and 2 x M5 washers

2: Remove Small Brackets

On each rail, remove the two screws (1) that are attaching the small bracket (2) to the rail, and remove the small bracket (2).

3: Remove Inner Rails and Attach to CBox Chassis

 

  1. Slide out the inner rail (1) from each mounting rail as far as you can, press the first metal clip (2) to enable further sliding and then the next clip (3) and detach it completely from the outer rail.

  2. Attach the inner rails to the CBox sides using the built-in slide clips. Pay careful attention to the orientation of the rail, which needs to be as shown in the figure. Make sure it is locked in place.

    The inner rail marked A attaches to the right side of the CBox. The inner rail marked B attaches to the left side of the CBox.

4: Attach Outer Rails to Rack

 

  1. Insert the rear bracket of one rail into the rear rack post. To do this, line up the spring loaded square nuts on the rear bracket with the square holes of the rear rack post. Press the lever to load the springs (1) and then push the rail towards the rear of the rack so that the square nuts go through the square rack holes (2). You may need to jiggle the rail until the bracket is in place. When the bracket is fully engaged, you will hear a click.

  2. Adjust the rail length as needed and insert the front bracket of the rail into the front vertical rack rail. Make sure the square nuts on the bracket are fully inserted into the square holes in the rack. Push until you hear a click when the bracket is fully engaged.

  3. Secure the front bracket with a screw at the front. This is important to prevent the rail from sliding inward when you insert the CBox at the next stage.

  4. Repeat the above steps for the mounting bracket at the other side.

 

5: Insert the CBox

 

  1. Extend the middle rails on both sides of the rack equally so that they both just emerge from the front of the rails.

    Alternatively, you can fully extend the rails until they lock into position. However, the next step is easier if you extend just enough and not fully.

  2. Horizontally insert the CBox into the rails. Press the release tabs on the inner rails to fully retract the chassis into the rack.

  3. Secure the Cbox using the thumb screw on the pre-attached front assembly.

Mounting an Ice Lake (HPE) CBox

The rail mount system for the Ice Lake CBox (HPE) provides support for 4-post racks with square or unthreaded round holes. There is no support for a cable management arm (CMA) or a strain relief bar (SRB). The static rails support a wide variety of racks.

Caution

The Ice Lake CBox (HPE) with the rack mount rails fitted is a heavy load weighing approximately 46.73 Kg (103.02 lbs). Use team lift or a server lift to lift the Ice Lake CBox (HPE) to the mounting height. The server lift is the recommended lifting method.

2: Install the Rack Rails

The rack rails can be installed in both round-hole or square-hole racks. In this procedure, left and right terminology is from the perspective of a user facing the front of the rack.

The illustrations in this procedure show one or more icons on the upper right corner of the image. The icons given below indicates whether the action shown in the image is for a round-hole or a square-hole rack, or for both

You Will Need

  • T-25 Torx screwdriver

 

Procedure

  1. Locate the orientation markers on the rack rails:

    1. The front end of the rails is marked FRONT.

    2. The middle of the rails is marked with LEFT and RIGHT.

  2. Fasten the rack rails to the front rack columns:

    1. Retract and hold the front retention bracket (1).

    2. Insert the pegs on the mounting flange into the rack holes, and then release the front retention bracket (2).

  3. To fit the depth of the rack, extend the inner rail from the outer rail.

  4. Fasten the rack rails to the rear rack columns:

    1. Retract and hold the rear retention bracket (1).

    2. Insert the pegs on the mounting flange into the rack holes, and then release the rear retention bracket (2).

    3. Install the rack rail screw (3).

3: Insert the Chassis into the Rack

  1. Slide the chassis into the rack until the chassis ears are flush against the rack columns.

  2. Verify the smooth operation of the rack rails.

    1. Pull the chassis outwards until the rails are fully extended.

    2. Slide the chassis back into the rack until the bezel ears are flush against the rack posts.

  3. Secure the chassis to the rack:

    1. Open the chassis ear latch (1).

    2. Tighten the chassis ear screw (2).
