To view capacity analytics:
-
In the left navigation menu of VAST Web UI, choose Analytics -> Capacity to open the Capacity page.
-
In the Select Type dropdown, choose the type of capacity you want to display:
-
(Default) Usable: The amount of usable capacity that is consumed by a directory. The higher the data reduction ratio (DDR), the lower this value is relative to the amount of data that is logically written.
Note
The total usable capacity of the cluster varies with cluster size and is from 81% through 88% of the total raw drive capacity of the cluster, with some capacity reserved for background activities and a varying data protection overhead.
-
Logical. The amount of data logically written to a directory prior to data reduction.
-
Unique: The amount of usable capacity that can be reclaimed by deleting a directory.
-
-
In the Tenant dropdown, select the tenant to view capacity utilization for. If multi-tenancy is not used, this field is set to default.
-
Choose a directory for which to display capacity utilization distribution.
Note
When you first open the Capacity page, capacity utilization for the root directory of the Element Store is shown.
To navigate to a directory:
-
Click the sector for the directory of interest in the circular chart.
-
Click the name of the directory in the Capacity Index pane (on the right).
-
Click the directory in the displayed path, for example:
-
Specify the path to the directory in the Jump to path field, for example:
Tip
Click
Copy Path to copy the current path to the clipboard.
-
The circular chart shows how capacity usage is distributed across subdirectories within a selected Element Store directory:
In the chart:
-
Up to 1000 directories in total are displayed at three levels:
-
The center circle represents 100% of capacity utilized for all data stored in the selected directory. It displays the amount of capacity used by data stored under the path.
-
The middle circle represents distribution of utilized capacity among next-level subdirectories of the selected directory. Each directory has its own color.
-
The outer circle shows how data is distributed inside each subdirectory. Subdirectories are shown in the same color as their parent directory.
-
-
A blank sector represents the composite proportional allocation of:
-
Hover over a subdirectory in the chart to see the estimated capacity utilization and DRR for the subdirectory.
The right pane provides more details for the selected path or a subdirectory:
Tip
Click to view the pane in full screen mode the right pane to the left.
In the right pane:
-
Data Reduction shows the data reduction ratio (DDR) for the selected path or a subdirectory.
Data reduction reduces the amount of usable capacity consumed by data. The result of data reduction is an increase in the effective capacity available for the data. VAST uses three techniques for data reduction: global compression, global deduplication, and global similarity compression.
-
The Capacity Index panel provides capacity utilization details for each subdirectory under the selected path. Usable, logical or unique capacity is displayed, depending on the capacity type selected in the Select Type dropdown on the top of the page.
Tip
Click Show/Hide small folders to show or hide all of the folders that are less than 5GB in size.
-
Usage: The amount of capacity attributed to the subdirectory.
-
%: The percentage of parent directory's total capacity attributed to the subdirectory.
-
DDR: The data reduction ratio in effect for the data in the subdirectory.
-
Average Atime: A weighted average value calculated from the atime values of the files in the directory, with weighting based on file size. atime is a file attribute that tells you when a file was last accessed.
-

Click the Refresh button to refresh the data shown.
